Irish parade in Moscow – a day of Russian-Irish friendship

21 March, 2010, 15:56

The national Irish holiday St. Patrick's Day was widely celebrated all across the world on Wednesday, and the Russian capital was no exception.

However, the highlight of the festivities, a parade through the center of Moscow, only took place on Sunday.

The first such parade was held in Moscow in 1992. Moscow city authorities are putting great effort into organizing the event. The security was very tight on Moscow’s central Dorogomilovskaya Street, which was also closed to traffic for the time of the parade.

Russians absolutely love to celebrate holidays, even those celebrated by other nations.

Last year about 40,000 people turned up to see or to take part in the traditional Irish parade, including Irish dancing.

This year most of the spectators are naturally Muscovites, but all the Irish people living in Moscow, though the community is rather small, attended the event, said Avril Conroy, the President of the Irish Club in Moscow.

Many in Russia also consider this holiday a day of Russian-Irish friendship, and Dublin reciprocated this year with, for the first time in its history, a three-day Russian festival, which was held in the Irish capital.

The Irish in Moscow

… Open for Business

In the early 90s the Irish expat community in Moscow swelled to over 500 active members, given the ripe opportunities as a result of the rapid capitalization of the country and demand in the national economy for development. Irish social events were regularly attended by a committed core of entrepreneurs, including those who set up bars such as Shamrock, Rosie O’Gradys, Sally O’Briens and Silvers, supermarkets and even D.I.Y. stores along with a large employment base for Irish citizens provided by Aer Rianta. Avril Conroy, current chair of the Irish Business Club in an interview reminisced of the times when there was a large Irish presence in the capital and the social life was vibrant. However, following the default on the Russian economy in 1998, many left the country in often difficult, sometimes ambiguous circumstances while investors retracted to the safety provided by the Celtic Tiger. Others were on short-term contracts and came for a new experience, seeing an opportunity before going back home a year later. In 2006 the business club underwent a successful revamp. The Irish presence in Moscow today is much smaller than it was in the 90s, although those who remain are a group of resilient and persistent people who have integrated into Moscow life...

Moscow turns green for St. Patrick’s Day

Russians love holidays - even those of other countries and cultures. One of their favourites is St. Patrick's Day, with official celebrations being an annual tradition in Moscow since 1992. Many Muscovites consider this originally religious holiday to be the "day of Irish-Russian friendship, because we have so much in common". St. Patrick's Day falls on March 17, but Moscow's 18th annual parade is to be held on Sunday, March 21, with the participation and support of Mayor Yury Luzhkov, Irish ambassador to Russia Philip McDonagh and president of the Irish Business Club, Avril Conroy. This year the parade's route has been changed from the traditional Ulitsa Novy Arbat to the wider Bolshaya Dorogomilovskaya Ulitsa, on the other side of the river, near the Kievskaya metro station. From midday, musicians, dancers, fairytale characters and jolly people dressed in green are to parade along the street to the square outside the Evro pei sky shopping center, where performances are to take place in front of a tribune for VIP guests. Last year, some 40,000 people turned out for the parade. St. Patrick's Day is celebrated not only in Moscow but also in St. Petersburg, Kazan, Kaliningrad, Chelyabinsk, Krasnoyarsk and many other Russian towns. Some Russian fans are even going to Ireland to celebrate, with one saying: "As we are enjoying St. Patrick's Day in Moscow later, on March 21, I suggest all Irish people come to Moscow to continue having fun after the 17th."

The MALINA Program operating results for 2007

On 3 April 2008 the MALINA™ loyalty coalition program celebrated its second anniversary. Managers and Partners of the Program announce results of cooperation and share plans for the future.

Eric Barray, CEO, Loyalty Partners Vostok (company which manages the MALINA™ Program):

“For its second year of activity, MALINA™ has been keeping an impressive growth rate, increasing its consumer membership base by 40% to 1,4 Millions family members and adding 4 new partner brands to the retailer coalition. Since launch, over 10 Billions MALINA Points have now been issued, placing MALINA™ as Russia’s top loyalty program and the favorite plastic card in the wallet of Moscow consumers.

In 2007, we have also significantly reinforced MALINA™ capabilities to provide effective and measurable business solutions in the area of customer behavior and profiling analysis, promotional campaigns and low-cost communication channels. To achieve so, we are now investing heavily in the development of our technical capabilities to analyze consumer data for a better understanding of customer behavior, which in turn provides our partners with the ability to make more informed, more relevant and more precise business decisions. We are committed to best practices in our efforts to increase the profitability of our retail partners’ businesses”.

Rostislav Ordovsky-Tanaevsky Blanco, President, Rostik Group, “The MALINA™ Program presents in Moscow one of the most cutting-edge marketing instruments in the world. Though the Russian retail and service market is at the stage of development, it begins to experience the advantages and benefits of the transition from merely discount systems to more effective loyalty programs. According to Rosinter Restaurants managerial accounting preliminary data, since the MALINA Program was launched at our Moscow casual dining restaurants, the base uptake at key brand restaurants of the company has increased more than 4 times. The average transaction with the MALINA card at IL Patio is 22.9% higher than a “usual” average transaction, at Planeta Sushi it is  10% higher, at TGI Friday’s – 34.5% higher”.

Orcun Onat, First Deputy CEO, ENKA TC: “With the help of the MALINA™ Loyalty Program ENKA TC can make a complete, 360 degrees view of our customers. According to the gained information we understand the customers’ needs better, so we can offer customer specific activities. The customers we offered special points increased their spending up to 40%. In addition we receive 5000 new customers each month”.

Jere Calmes, President of OAO Pharmacy Chain 36.6 and CEO of the Management Company, “In the past two years, the MALINA™ program and the partners that make up MALINA™ had succeeded in offering something different, something more, and something great to millions of households and families in Moscow. As a direct result of MALINA™ and its targeted marketing capabilities, 36.6 has experienced 18, 000 incremental customers per quarter in 2007 and average transaction rates that are 2 times higher than non-MALINA™ customer transactions.”

Vladimir Ryabokon, Vice President, VimpelCom, «Within 2 years the Program has proven its efficiency. We managed to decrease the outflow of subscribers – the Program members 5 times. The Program also helped us to promote additional services: SMS, MMS, mobile internet. Besides, issuing bonus points to our subscribers for increase of their spending on mobile services resulted in ARPU rise: average revenue per user being a MALINA™ member has increased by 15%.”

Estimating the two years cooperation with the MALINA™ Program, Avril Conroy, CEO, “BP Service stations”, PCEC, says, “The MALINA™ loyalty program is the most up-to-date and active of the existing marketing instruments in Russia.”

Roman Vorobiev, Member of the Board, Head of Consumer Banking Directorate, Raiffeisenbank,  “Our co-branding product – MALINA™-Raiffeisenbank credit card – has successfully occupied its niche on the Russian market of co-branding products. This product  potential is very high which is proven by its significant popularity among customers. Taking into consideration the extensive marketing support of the project we expect the Program to develop successfully further and help us to strengthen our position against competitors.”

Alexander Glushkov, CEO, MONEKO, owner of MONE beauty salons chain, «The average transaction with the MALINA™ card is 2640 rubles, which is 20% higher than a “usual” average transaction. New customers acquisition as a result of the Program promo activities in the 1st quarter of 2008 has reached 80% of the performance planned for the first year of participation in the Program. We consider the Program an effective instrument for obtaining our main business objective – expansion of the existing salons chain.”
Michael Llewelyn, CM4P Vostok Board representative for Loyalty Partners Vostok, CEO,  CM4P UK Ltd, compares the MALINA™ Program to similar loyalty programs in the world and emphasizes the MALINA™ Program achievements.  For example the MALINA™ Program has achieved the esteemed goal of "1 to 1" marketing focus in only 2 years (it took Nectar program, UK  4 years to achieve this result).
